Saturday, 21 March 2015 23:08

Duty bearers are actors who have an obligation or responsibility to respect, promote and realize human rights

and abstain from human rights violations. The Government of Kenya is the principal duty bearer and has the legal obligation to respect and promote rights of the girl child. The government has institutionalized line ministries to ensure rights of children are protected and they include the ministry of health, finance, education, social services and the judiciary among others.

On 9th March, 2016 representatives from the following institutions; Ministry of health, Benya Academy, Manga Ward Manager, Omosocho Paralegal Office, Tombe SDA Primary, Omogwa D.O.K Primary, Kiogutwa Primary, area Chief, churches and women groups participated in a duty bearers sensitization meeting that was held at Guardian Hotel. The main purpose of this meeting was to inform the duty bearers of their role in the FGM project and to empower them with information on what FGM is and its Effects. The inclusion of leaders from the religious, public and private sectors in our project is key in securing a supportive environment for change. This actors can positively contribute towards eliminating the FGM practise within their respective fields through advocacy.
