The Holiday Mentorship program

The Holiday Mentorship program is aimed at engaging the pupils through their free time during the August Holiday. Most parents amongst the kisii people, take advantage of the long holiday period to cut their girls and let them heal before going back to school in September.

The pupils fetched from omogwa, Benya, Tombe, and Kiogutwa primary schools participated in the Anti-FGM relay, drawing competition testing their creativity in ending FGM, and class sessions that equipped them with information improving their capacity to say NO to FGM.

“The pupils come ready to learn, the parents are so supportive too. They prepare the pupils early enough and send them here as they believe we will make their sons and daughters better people in the society in the near future. We are happy and grateful to manga heart. “Said Eunice Kwamboka a volunteer and Teacher at Omogwa Primary school.

FGM is often considered a necessary part of raising a girl, and a way to prepare her for adulthood and marriage. It is a considered a social convention and the social pressure to conform to what others do and have been doing, as well as the need to be accepted socially and the fear of being rejected by the community, are strong motivations to perpetuate the practice.

It is motivated by “acceptable sexual behaviours” and aims to ensure premarital virginity and marital fidelity. It is believed to lower a woman’s libido and believed to help in helping woman resist extramarital sexual acts.

“We will be having the same program in December. We expect to reach more pupils. The number of people conducting FGM has gone down and the community is so supportive. Am so glad that we have ready support in terms of funding from the International Solidarity Foundation.” Grace Murungi Project Officer Manga Heart.

The program is in line with Kenya Vision 2030 social pillar – Gender, Children and social Development: vision 2030 emphasizes on policies aimed at empowering vulnerable groups to enable them to take part fully in nation building.
